Michigan Senate Hopeful Sees Himself in ‘Good Shape’

Michigan Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers expressed confidence in his campaign’s prospects during a private call with supporters last month. Rogers stated that his campaign was in ‘pretty good shape’ overall and specifically felt positive about his chances if former public health official Abdul El-Sayed were to capture the Democratic nomination in the August 4 primary.

Democratic Primary Debate

The Democratic primary has seen a fierce debate between El-Sayed, who is running as a progressive with the support of Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Rep. Haley Stevens, who is running as a more moderate candidate. National Democrats consider Michigan a crucial state to retain in order to capture a majority in the Senate.

Rogers, a former House member who lost a tight 2024 Senate race to now-Sen. Elissa Slotkin, made his comments on a June 15 call with campaign supporters. He discussed the benefits of running unopposed in the GOP primary while Democrats engage in their primary battle.

Campaign Strategies

Rogers’ campaign has argued that both Democratic candidates are out of touch with working families in Michigan. El-Sayed’s campaign responded by highlighting his grassroots support and the strength of his fundraising efforts.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee has released ads warning that El-Sayed is ‘too radical for Michigan.’ Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, has also stated that El-Sayed’s nomination would make it easier for Republicans to win the seat.
