Health officials in Mid-Michigan are reporting multiple confirmed cases of a parasite that can cause gastrointestinal illness, according to the Shiawassee County Health Department. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is investigating what it described as a “sudden and large increase” in Cyclospora cases statewide.
Cyclospora Infections on the Rise
Recent outbreaks in the United States have been linked to contaminated fresh produce. Health authorities emphasize the parasite does not spread from person to person. Symptoms of Cyclospora infection typically develop between two days and two weeks after exposure and can include gastrointestinal illness.
To reduce the risk of infection, health officials recommend proper food handling practices. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services continues to monitor the reported increase in Cyclospora cases.
