The Midtown Victorian Drill Team is preparing to march in Springfield’s Old-Fashioned 4th of July Parade & Celebration, sponsored by the Midtown Neighborhood Association. The team, which was founded in 1991 by Nancy Hackett and Kate Spangler, will perform a routine created by Mary Jo Greer, a costume designer and choreographer.
Parade Details
The parade will start at 10 a.m. and wind through Midtown before ending at Washington Park, where festivities will continue with live music, free water and ice cream, and children’s games. The DNA BBQ food truck will also be on site.
The Midtown Victorian Drill Team is looking for new members, who must be at least 14 years old and able to march about 1.5 miles over two hours. Members are asked to wear a long white skirt, white blouse, and white sneakers, and to bring their own parasols and hats.
The team’s routine will be performed to patriotic marches, including those by John Phillip Sousa, and will feature era-appropriate homes along the parade route. The team is motivated by a love of the Midtown community and a desire to show off the historic neighborhood.
