Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding, rumored to be taking place on July 3, has fueled an etiquette debate about whether couples should ask guests to give up a prime summer holiday weekend for their special day.
Holiday Weekend Etiquette
Etiquette experts say that while every couple has the right to choose a date that’s meaningful to them, holiday weekends can be tricky for guests. Many people travel or spend time with family during these weekends, and guests may have to give up their own plans to attend the wedding.
California-based etiquette expert Lisa Mirza Grotts told Fox News Digital that guests should not get too hung up on the date, and that the most memorable weddings are defined by how guests are made to feel. However, she also acknowledged that holiday weekends can be challenging for guests, especially if they have to travel or give up time with their own families.
Celebrity Weddings
Celebrity weddings like Swift’s are often different from traditional weddings, with many guests willing to rearrange their schedules to attend. However, even celebrities have to consider the needs and schedules of their guests, especially if they’re planning a large wedding with many out-of-town guests.
Florida-based etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore advised couples to give their guests plenty of notice if they’re planning a wedding on a holiday weekend, so that guests can plan ahead and make necessary arrangements.
The NYPD is preparing to lock down a city block outside Madison Square Garden, the apparent location of the wedding, according to a source with knowledge of the event. The source detailed an event spanning multiple days of setup, with 1,000 guests expected to attend.
While some guests may view Swift and Kelce’s wedding as a can’t-miss event, others may have to decline due to prior commitments or family obligations. As one Reddit user wrote, ‘I think a lot of people have traditions and routines surrounding this holiday. I also think it’s a day many people want to be outside, near water, drink[ing] beer and [enjoying] BBQ with friends and family.’
