MICHIGAN and Minnesota have reported cyberattacks on their water systems, with the FBI investigating the incidents. In Michigan, nine water systems were impacted, but all systems continued to operate safely, according to Dale George, the director of communications at the state’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.

Cyberattacks on Water Systems

The cyberattacks in Michigan surfaced after the state received a federal cyber alert about attempts to tamper with operational technology at water systems. The FBI, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and other agencies warned in an advisory that Iranian hackers have been targeting water and wastewater systems and the operational controls of other critical infrastructure sectors.

In Minnesota, authorities said cyberattacks targeted over 30 water systems. The city of Braham asked residents to minimize water use for a few hours on Monday after a cyberattack shut down the operating controls of the water plant. The city of Plymouth also reported a cyberattack on its water infrastructure communications, but the issue was resolved by Tuesday afternoon.

The FBI has not publicly identified a culprit and is working with interagency partners to protect critical infrastructure and investigate the cyberattacks.
