Michigan Health Dept. Reports 14,277 Cyclosporiasis Cases, Up 368 in One Week

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) released its latest update on the state’s ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak, confirming a total of 14,277 laboratory‑verified cases as of Thursday. This figure represents an increase of 368 cases, or roughly 3 percent, compared with the department’s report a week earlier.

Where the Numbers Are Highest

Within the state, Wayne County leads with 2,029 confirmed infections, followed closely by Oakland County with 1,499 cases. The age group most affected remains adults aged 30 to 39, accounting for 2,879 of the total cases.

Context of the Outbreak

Michigan has been identified as the hardest‑hit state in a multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic intestinal illness caused by the protozoan Cyclosporiasis. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recorded 15,716 confirmed cases across 47 states as of August 18, indicating the broader national scope of the problem.

MDHHS officials noted that the recent uptick largely reflects a backlog of reports being processed rather than a surge in new infections. Nonetheless, the department continues to urge residents to practice safe food handling, especially with fresh produce that may be contaminated.

Health Impact and Fatalities

To date, Michigan has reported two deaths linked to the outbreak. Both individuals had significant underlying health conditions, underscoring the heightened risk for those with compromised immune systems.

Symptoms of cyclosporiasis typically include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fever, and they can persist for several weeks if untreated. The disease is generally self‑limiting, but medical attention is recommended for severe or prolonged cases.

Public‑Health Response

State health officials are collaborating with local health departments, the CDC, and federal partners to trace the source of the contamination. While the exact origin remains under investigation, past outbreaks have been linked to contaminated fresh produce such as berries, leafy greens, and herbs.

MDHHS continues to issue advisories reminding consumers to wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly, avoid cross‑contamination in the kitchen, and stay informed through official health alerts.

What Residents Can Do

  • Wash all fresh produce under running water before consumption.
  • Separate raw meats from ready‑to‑eat foods during preparation.
  • Seek medical care if you experience persistent diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.
  • Stay updated via the MDHHS website or local health department bulletins.

The department will provide further updates as more data become available and as the investigation progresses.
