Media Held at Gunpoint During Vandenberg Base Groundbreaking

Vandenberg Space Force Base in California experienced a security mishap on Monday that temporarily halted a media‑covered groundbreaking ceremony for a new missile‑operator training facility. Reporters from News Channel 3‑12, Noozhawk, KSBY and the Santa Maria Times arrived at the base’s front gates ahead of the scheduled 1:30 p.m. event.

According to News Channel reporter Jarrod Zinn, the media crews lined up for the standard convoy escort and began following the military escort vehicle when they were stopped. Base security personnel ordered the journalists out of their vehicles at gunpoint and instructed them to raise their hands. Sirens sounded and barriers were raised, preventing the reporters from entering the installation and causing them to miss the groundbreaking.

Resolution and Official Statement

All of the journalists were eventually cleared and released without further incident. Base personnel later apologized to the reporters for the confusion. In response to inquiries, a spokesperson for Space Launch Delta 30’s public affairs office issued a statement noting that Vandenberg Space Force Base has been experiencing an increased number of unauthorized entry attempts. The statement explained that a communication breakdown occurred when the media entered the installation, and that “every potential unauthorized presence must be treated as a legitimate threat until proven otherwise.” The spokesperson emphasized that the base’s priority remains the security of its personnel and facilities.

The incident highlights the challenges military installations face in balancing open public access for community outreach with stringent security protocols. While the base’s public affairs office acknowledged the unsettling nature of the event, it reaffirmed that the safety of both service members and civilians is paramount.

Local officials and community members have not yet commented on the incident, but the event underscores the importance of clear communication between military security forces and media representatives during public events. The groundbreaking ceremony, intended to showcase the new training facility, proceeded after the media were cleared, though the delay disrupted the planned coverage.

Vandenberg Space Force Base continues to play a critical role in the nation’s missile‑defense and space‑launch capabilities. The base’s leadership indicated that a review of entry procedures will be conducted to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
