Chargers center Tyler Biadasz carted off practice field with leg injury

Los Angeles – During Tuesday’s joint practice between the Los Angeles Chargers and the San Francisco 49ers, veteran center Tyler Biadasz was carted off the field after sustaining a left‑leg injury. The incident occurred in an 11‑on‑11 drill when 49ers defensive tackle Sebastian Valdez fell into Biadasz’s leg.

Quarterback Justin Herbert expressed concern, saying, “I don’t know exactly what happened but hoping for the best for him.” After Biadasz was taken to the locker room, rookie Jake Slaughter, a second‑round pick from the University of Florida, assumed the center reps. Slaughter, who has primarily been playing left guard in training camp, praised Biadasz as a mentor and leader, noting, “Tyler was doing so well. He was the guy. He’s been nothing but a wonderful mentor. He’s been such a good leader in the room, helping me see the big picture better.”

Potential impact on the depth chart

Biadasz, who signed with the Chargers in March after starting 31 games over two seasons with the Washington Commanders, may be sidelined for an uncertain period. With his status unclear, Slaughter could find himself starting at center for the upcoming season. Coach Jim Harbaugh had highlighted the offensive line’s health earlier in the week, singling out Slaughter and rookie Travis Burke as players who could earn Week 1 starting roles. Harbaugh remarked, “You just don’t anticipate that with a rookie offensive lineman especially.”

The two‑hour practice continued without further incident. Veteran linemen reminded the younger players to secure their chin straps, emphasizing the intensity of the session. “The vets were like ‘Hey, buckle your chin strap. This is the closest thing to game intensity and you’re going to get live reps,’” Slaughter recalled. “It was a really cool opportunity. It was a lot of fun.”

Background on Biadasz and the Chargers’ line

Tyler Biadasz entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2020, quickly earning a starting role with Washington. His consistency and leadership earned him a three‑year contract with the Chargers, where he was expected to anchor the interior line alongside veterans like Corey Linsley and newly drafted linemen. The Chargers have been working to solidify their offensive front ahead of the 2026 season, aiming to protect quarterback Justin Herbert and establish a strong running game.

Jake Slaughter, the 2024 second‑round selection, has shown versatility by playing both guard and center positions during camp. His ability to step in on short notice reflects the depth the Chargers are cultivating among younger players. Travis Burke, another rookie mentioned by Harbaugh, is also competing for interior line snaps.

Looking ahead

The Chargers will assess Biadasz’s injury in the coming days to determine his availability for preseason activities. In the meantime, the coaching staff will continue to evaluate Slaughter and Burke as potential starters. The incident underscores the physical nature of football practice and the importance of depth on the offensive line.

Fans can follow updates on the Chargers’ official website and social media channels as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
