Maryland Historical Trust awards $1 million in preservation grants to 11 sites

The Maryland Historical Trust revealed this month that it will distribute a total of $1 million in historic preservation grants for fiscal year 2026. Eleven projects across Maryland were selected from a pool of 58 applications that collectively requested more than $4.9 million.

Local sites receiving support

Among the awardees are the Patterson Park Observatory and three landmark churches located in the Baltimore area. These sites will receive grants ranging from $62,000 to $100,000 to address urgent restoration needs and to cover costs for architectural, engineering, archaeological, and consulting services.

Statewide impact

The remaining seven grant recipients are spread throughout the state, reflecting the Trust’s commitment to preserving Maryland’s diverse cultural heritage. Each project will use the funds to protect historic structures, improve public access, and ensure that the stories embedded in these places are documented for future generations.

How the program works

The Historic Preservation Grant Program supports both nonprofit organizations and private citizens. Eligible activities include acquisition of historic properties, construction and rehabilitation work, and professional services required to develop and execute preservation plans. By offering financial assistance, the Trust aims to encourage stewardship of Maryland’s historic resources and to stimulate local economies through preservation‑related projects.

Application process and future funding

Applicants submitted detailed proposals outlining the significance of their sites, the scope of work, and projected budgets. The Trust evaluated each submission based on historical importance, urgency of needed repairs, and the potential for community benefit. With more than $4.9 million in requests, the Trust’s $1 million allocation represents a competitive selection process.

Looking ahead, the Maryland Historical Trust plans to continue its grant program in upcoming fiscal years, seeking additional applications from groups dedicated to safeguarding the state’s historic fabric. Stakeholders are encouraged to monitor future announcements for new funding opportunities.

Community response

Local preservation advocates and neighborhood groups have welcomed the funding, noting that the grants will help protect beloved landmarks and promote heritage tourism. The awarded projects are expected to create jobs for skilled tradespeople, architects, and historians, further contributing to Maryland’s economic vitality.
