McKinney ISD is stepping up to support local families by offering free meals to children and teens throughout the summer months. This initiative is made possible through a partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s SUN Meals program, according to a district news release.
Ensuring Nutrition During Summer
The program’s primary goal is to ensure that children and teens in the community continue to have access to nutritious food even when school is not in session. As McKinney ISD Student Nutrition Manager James Shoemake stated, “Good nutrition shouldn’t take a summer break.” The SUN Meals program is designed to keep children fueled and focused, providing them with the necessary nutrition to thrive during the summer.
Program Details
Meals will adhere to the USDA’s nutrition guidelines and will be served in a clean and welcoming environment. Importantly, no registration or identification is required, making it accessible to all families in need. The meals will be available at two locations:
- Faubion Middle School, serving meals Monday through Friday from June 1 to July 24. Breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., and lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- Another location at 500 Dowell St., McKinney, offering breakfast from 7:20 to 8 a.m. and lunch from 10:45 a.m. to noon.
This initiative underscores the importance of community support and the role of local institutions in ensuring the well-being of children and families, aligning with our values of supporting traditional families and community welfare.
