Residents of Maysville, still recovering from the devastating effects of an EF2 tornado, found a sense of Christmas cheer in the midst of June. A Christmas movie production transformed downtown Maysville into a winter wonderland, complete with fake snow, Christmas lights, and a holiday parade.
A Community Comes Together
Dozens of people participated in the filming, dressing up in holiday attire to appear as extras in the movie. The event provided a welcome distraction from the storm damage and power outages that many residents were still dealing with. Mark Tabler, a participant in the filming, said, “I got this costume for a party five or six years ago, and it’s a great chance to get out and celebrate Christmas with a lot of other people in June.”
Leah Frederick, another resident, joked about her electricity being back on for only two hours before heading downtown to participate in the movie parade. Despite the challenges, many residents welcomed the chance to take a break from storm recovery and enjoy some holiday cheer.
A Movie Production Brings Joy
The movie, produced by Turning Point, follows a couple falling in love during the holiday season. Filmmakers selected Maysville for its picturesque downtown and have spent weeks decorating storefronts, creating snow-covered scenes, and filming throughout the city. Fortunately, downtown Maysville escaped the worst of the storms, with only minor damage to the movie set.
Shannon Mann with Turning Point said, “We’ve been praying for all the other people who lost power and have downed trees and had damage to their buildings and their homes.” The movie production has brought a sense of joy and community to the town, and filming is expected to continue through early July.
