Senior research scientist John Jumper announced he is leaving Google DeepMind to join AI startup Anthropic. Jumper, a Nobel prize winner, is known for co-creating AlphaFold, an AI that has predicted over 200 million protein structures.
Talent War in Tech
Technology giants like Meta and Alphabet, along with AI startups like Anthropic and OpenAI, are competing for top researchers to build next-generation AI systems. Jumper’s departure comes after Noam Shazeer, a Google vice president, left to join OpenAI.
Anthropic is currently involved in a high-stakes legal and regulatory battle with the U.S. government. The startup is hosting a science event on June 30, but did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Jumper’s new role.
Jumper described Google DeepMind as a ‘special place’ and expressed his continued interest in its future discoveries. Google DeepMind spokesperson said, ‘We are grateful for John’s significant contributions to Google DeepMind’s work in advancing science and AI. We wish him well in his next chapter.’
