Max Verstappen signs new Red Bull contract through 2030 ahead of Dutch Grand Prix

Four‑time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen confirmed on Thursday that his contract with Red Bull Racing now runs through the 2030 season. The announcement came just before the Dutch Grand Prix, which will be held at his home circuit in Zandvoort this weekend.

Why the extension matters

Verstappen, 28, has been with Red Bull since he entered the sport as a 17‑year‑old rookie in 2015. Over the past eight seasons he has captured four world titles and amassed 71 race victories, making him one of the sport’s all‑time greats. The new agreement replaces a previous deal that was set to expire in 2028 and reportedly contained performance‑related clauses that could have allowed an earlier exit.

In a statement, Verstappen described Red Bull as a “second family” and said staying with the team “is really special and something I have always wanted to do.” He added that the partnership has produced “incredible moments” and four championships.

Team performance and recent challenges

Red Bull has struggled to match the pace of rival Mercedes this season, and Verstappen has not yet secured a victory—a rare winless stretch not seen since his rookie year in 2015. The Dutch driver also raised safety concerns after two separate rear‑wing failures caused high‑speed crashes during the season.

Despite those setbacks, Verstappen praised the leadership of team principal Laurent Mekies, who took over after longtime leader Christian Horner departed last year. Verstappen said he sees a “clear vision” for the future under Mekies and believes the team is on the right track.

Speculation about other opportunities

Earlier reports linked Verstappen with a possible move to McLaren after a meeting between his representatives and McLaren management in June. McLaren chief executive Zak Brown later clarified that the team does not have an opening for Verstappen and will continue to focus on drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Another driver once considered a potential replacement for Verstappen at Red Bull, Carlos Sainz Jr., signed a new contract with Williams, further reducing the likelihood of a major driver shuffle.

Personal considerations

Verstappen has previously hinted that he might step back from full‑time racing to spend more time with his family, especially as he expressed frustration with the 2026 F1 regulations that increase reliance on electric battery power. The new contract suggests he has chosen to continue his racing career while balancing those personal priorities.

What the extension means for the sport

By locking in its star driver for the next several years, Red Bull signals stability at the top of its driver lineup. The move also provides fans with a clear narrative heading into the remainder of the season and the upcoming 2026 technical regulations overhaul.

With the Dutch Grand Prix approaching, Verstappen will have the chance to race in front of a home crowd before the season concludes, adding extra excitement for Dutch supporters and the global Formula 1 audience.
