Maryland leaders say they’re confident, but not yet certain that the waters around Hunting Creek Lake in Cunningham Falls State Park are safe again.
Rabies Concerns
A beaver that attacked someone later tested positive for rabies, prompting the lake’s closure for swimming. A second similar attack led to the area around the lake being closed off.
According to Joshua Tabora, a furbearer biologist with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, beavers are rarely associated with the rabies virus. However, their behaviors make it likely that one of the beavers involved in a recent attack gave the virus to the other.
Tabora said the department is in its “fact-finding phase” and they don’t have all the information needed to guarantee that there is no risk to public health and safety.
