Marquette women’s basketball adds French center Amina Traore for 2026-27 season

Marquette University’s women’s basketball program took a significant step toward strengthening its frontcourt by signing 6‑foot‑2 center Amina Traore from France. The addition was announced by head coach Cara Consuegra on Thursday, confirming that Traore will report to Milwaukee for the 2026‑27 season.

International experience and skill set

Traore arrives from Paris after a multi‑year stint in French basketball, most recently with Monaco Basket Association in the LF2 league. Her résumé includes time with Pôle France, Charnay and Mondeville, as well as participation in France’s national‑team pipeline. Consuegra praised Traore’s blend of size, versatility and experience, noting that she can defend the paint, switch onto perimeter players and stretch the floor offensively.

College‑ready production

During the 2025‑26 LF2 season, Traore appeared in 21 games for Monaco BA, averaging 2.8 points and 2.3 rebounds in nine minutes per contest. While the raw numbers are modest, her limited minutes reflect the depth of the professional roster and the developmental role she played. Consuegra emphasized that Traore’s impact goes beyond statistics; her maturity, adaptability and team‑first attitude align with the culture Marquette is building.

International pedigree

Traore has also represented France on the world stage. She played at the 2023 FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup, pulling down 3.9 rebounds per game across seven contests. The year before, she contributed to France’s run at the 2022 FIBA U18 Women’s European Championship, averaging 6.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Her involvement in France’s youth national‑team system began at the U16 level, giving her exposure to top‑tier competition from an early age.

What she brings to the Golden Eagles

Consuegra highlighted several specific ways Traore will help the program. Defensively, she can anchor the paint and provide the size needed to protect the rim. Offensively, her ability to switch onto perimeter players and stretch the floor creates flexibility for the team’s schemes. Beyond the X’s and O’s, Traore’s competitive spirit, work ethic and commitment to teammates fit the Golden Eagles’ emphasis on winning and character development.

Looking ahead

Traore’s arrival adds depth to a Marquette roster that already features a mix of experienced veterans and promising underclassmen. The coaching staff expects her to compete for playing time early in the season, with the potential to develop into a key contributor as she adapts to the collegiate game in the United States.

Community impact

Marquette’s recruitment of an international player underscores the university’s growing reputation as a destination for top talent worldwide. Local fans can look forward to seeing a new style of play and cultural exchange as Traore integrates into the Milwaukee community, both on campus and in the broader city.

Coach Consuegra summed up the sentiment: “We are excited to see Amina continue to grow in our program and elevate those around her. Her competitive spirit and team‑first mindset embody the values we cherish at Marquette.”
