Marquette men’s soccer defeats Saint Mary’s 2-0 at Valley Fields

Marquette University’s men’s soccer team closed the opening week of the 2026 season with a 2-0 win over Saint Mary’s on Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields in Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles broke the deadlock late in the second half, scoring two goals in the final 21 minutes.

Game recap

Marquette attempted an early lead for the second straight game when freshman Gabe Watkins saw his seventh‑minute strike disallowed after a review found a foul in the build‑up. The delay appeared to stall the Golden Eagles’ momentum.

Both teams entered halftime scoreless after a quiet first half. In the second half, Marquette made three substitutions at the 65‑minute mark, injecting fresh energy. Five minutes later, freshman Aiden Goldberg was involved in a one‑on‑one situation in the box, but a review did not award a goal.

Following the stoppage, Marquette earned a corner. Mateo Stoka delivered a cross that found senior Clayton Hamler, whose header was knocked down to freshman Tomiwa Adewumi. Adewumi turned his defender and guided the ball off his chest into the right corner for the game‑winning goal in the 69th minute.

Saint Mary’s pressed for an equalizer, but in the 87th minute, Drew Mullins was pulled down in the box. Mads Konrad Horgøien sealed the victory by striking a shot to the keeper’s right, cementing the 2-0 result.

Looking ahead

Marquette’s next challenge comes Thursday when the team travels south to DeKalb, Illinois, for its first road test against Northern Illinois. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Central Time.
