Judge Geoffrey Gaither accused of prolonged case backlog
According to the commission, Judge Geoffrey Gaither took months, and in some instances years, to render decisions in family and juvenile matters. Seven of those cases were delayed so long that another judge was required to take over.
The commission also said Judge Gaither did not ensure that a magistrate and court staff kept pace with their workload. The resulting deficiencies led to scheduling problems, delayed record updates, and late filing of court documents.
Commission officials noted that they have been working with Judge Gaither for roughly four years to address these issues, yet the problems persisted. Judge Gaither has been given 20 days to respond to the complaints.
Judge Jose Salinas charged with oversight lapses in criminal docket
Five separate complaints have been filed against Marion Superior Court Judge Jose Salinas. The commission alleges that Judge Salinas failed to properly supervise his court staff and did not act promptly in dozens of criminal cases.
Approximately 40 cases under Judge Salinas were reported to have missing dates or other administrative errors. In several instances, cases were dismissed because they lingered too long without progress.
The commission further claims that criminal records that should have been cleared remained in the system. In one example, an old conviction that should have been removed later influenced a man’s arrest.
Additionally, the commission says Judge Salinas ordered a mental‑health evaluation for a defendant but never held the required hearing to determine the defendant’s competency to stand trial. The defendant proceeded to trial and was convicted.

The Indiana Supreme Court will review the complaints to determine whether either judge violated judicial conduct rules and, if so, what disciplinary action is appropriate.
In a related matter, the commission publicly reprimanded Vigo County Judge Matthew Sheehan for taking too long to rule in a divorce case. Judge Sheehan accepted the reprimand and apologized, avoiding formal charges.
