March on Washington commemorates 63rd anniversary with ‘Defend the Vote’ theme

Washington, D.C. – On Friday, the 63rd anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic March on Washington kicked off on the National Mall. The event opened on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial under the theme “Defend the Vote,” emphasizing that the struggle for voting rights and civil liberties remains unfinished.

Key speakers and organizers

Fox 5’s Stephanie Ramirez reported that the march featured a lineup of national leaders and local officials. Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger is slated to address the crowd, and the Human Rights Campaign helped mobilize participants. Spokesperson Ramiro Sarmiento highlighted the need to protect the franchise after recent Supreme Court decisions that weakened the Voting Rights Act and altered redistricting standards.

Reverend Al Sharpton, the National Action Network, and members of the King family also led the demonstration, underscoring the continued relevance of Dr. King’s vision for economic justice and equal rights.

Congressional presence and schedule

Members of Congress attended the ceremony, which began at 9 a.m. Keynote remarks were expected around 11 a.m., with the main march slated to start near 1 p.m. Organizers said the gathering serves as a reminder that the work to secure fair elections and protect civil rights is far from complete.

The march reflects a broader national conversation about safeguarding the ballot, especially as courts and legislatures consider new voting‑law reforms. Participants urged lawmakers to uphold the Constitution’s guarantee of equal voting access for every citizen.
