Former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes is out of the race for Wisconsin governor, dropping the news on social media Thursday. “We’re incredibly proud of all the things that we’ve accomplished and all the resources that we have raised to spread our message. But it’s become very clear who our nominee is going to be,” he said.
Barnes’ announcement follows the release of a Marquette Poll showing him trailing state Representative Francesca Hong in the Democratic primary, the winner of which will likely face congressman Tom Tiffany in November.
“We have to do everything to beat Tom Tiffany. This is life or death for Wisconsinites who are losing their healthcare under the Trump administration,” said Barnes. “People who can’t afford childcare. The folks who are being squeezed by bills while the rich continue to get richer.”
Remaining Candidates
In addition to Hong, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, state Senator Kelda Roys, and former Tony Evers cabinet member Joel Brennan remain in the primary. Crowley, who’s been endorsed by Evers after re-entering the race, had 7% support from Democratic primary voters in that Marquette Poll.
