Man who sprayed vinegar at Rep. Ilhan Omar to be sentenced in Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS — A federal judge is set to hand down a sentence on Wednesday for Anthony Kazmierczak, the man who sprayed a syringe of water and apple cider vinegar at Rep. Ilhan Omar during a recent town‑hall meeting. Prosecutors have asked that Kazmierczak serve 14 months in prison, citing his history of alcohol abuse, mental‑health concerns and a recent Parkinson’s diagnosis.

Incident and court proceedings

On Jan. 27, Kazmierczak leapt from the audience at the town hall, shouted that Rep. Omar was “splitting Minnesota apart,” and sprayed the liquid at the congresswoman. Security officers quickly subdued him and handed him over to police. Rep. Omar was unharmed and continued the meeting after the arrest.

When asked what he remembered, Kazmierczak told U.S. District Judge Joan N. Ericksen, “It’s fuzzy.” In a later message to Rep. Omar, he apologized, writing, “I’m sorry if I scared you,” and accepted responsibility for his actions.

Prosecutors’ view

The government’s sentencing memorandum noted that Kazmierczak had texted at least three people before the event, indicating he planned to do something involving Rep. Omar, but he refused to explain his intent. He also arranged dog care and a bail‑bond contact in the same messages. The memo highlighted his long‑standing struggles with alcohol, mental‑health issues, and a 2022 Parkinson’s diagnosis as aggravating factors.

Political context

The attack occurred amid Operation Metro Surge, a large‑scale immigration enforcement effort that saw more than 2,000 immigration officers sweep through the Twin Cities. The operation sparked protests, arrests and, tragically, the deaths of two U.S. citizens.

Rep. Omar, a refugee from Somalia, has been a frequent target of President Donald Trump’s anti‑immigration rhetoric. Since her election seven years ago, President Trump has repeatedly told her to “go back” to her country of origin and has labeled her “garbage.” The President’s comments reflect his broader commitment to stronger borders and the enforcement of immigration laws, a stance that many Minnesotans view as essential to public safety.

Community reaction

Local residents expressed a mixture of concern and relief that the case is moving forward. Some community members, citing the recent immigration enforcement operation, said the incident underscored the need for respectful dialogue in public forums. Others emphasized the importance of protecting elected officials from intimidation.

In social‑media posts, Kazmierczak had previously criticized former President Joe Biden and described Democrats as “angry and liars.” He also echoed President Trump’s call for a “stronger and more prosperous” United States.

What comes next

The sentencing hearing will determine whether Kazmierczak receives the full 14‑month term recommended by prosecutors or a lesser penalty. The court will also consider his health issues and prior record. Regardless of the outcome, the case serves as a reminder that violent actions against public servants will be met with the full force of the law.

Minneapolis officials continue to monitor public‑meeting security and encourage citizens to engage in civil discourse, especially during a time of heightened immigration enforcement and community tension.
