Residents at the Parkside of Fontainebleau apartment complex in West Miami-Dade had been experiencing mail theft for weeks, prompting them to install new surveillance cameras to deter crime. Less than 24 hours after the cameras were installed, they caught a man in the act of stealing mail.
Surveillance Footage
The surveillance video shows a man riding his bike into the parking lot and then approaching the community mailboxes. He looks over his shoulder, attempts to open the mailbox panel, and then stuffs mail into a bag before riding away.
Henry Lorie, the man who installed the cameras, said that the residents had contacted him about two weeks ago to install the cameras after repeated complaints of mail theft. Lorie expressed surprise that the thief was confident enough to steal mail despite the presence of cameras.
Jorge Miranda, a resident of the apartment complex, had his mail stolen just weeks ago. He said that his missing mail was mostly ads, but he knows neighbors who weren’t as lucky, including one who had a credit card stolen and used for fraudulent charges.
Miranda feels relieved that investigators have a clear image of the suspect and hopes that the video serves as a warning to others to protect themselves. He advises residents to be careful and pick up their mail as quickly as possible to avoid becoming victims of mail theft.
