Louisville Zoo welcomes three new Amur tiger cubs, names announced

Louisville, Ky. — The Louisville Zoo celebrated a milestone for its conservation program this week as three newborn Amur tiger cubs were officially named. The female cubs—Frankie, Masha and Mira—were born to their mother, Viktoria, in May, marking the first Amur tiger births at the zoo since 2004.

Names reflect the zoo’s commitment to education and family

Zoo officials explained that each name was chosen to help visitors connect with the young animals and to underscore the zoo’s focus on wildlife education. “Frankie, Masha and Mira are not just names; they are ambassadors for a species that faces serious threats in the wild,” said Zoo Director Jeffery Hensley. “By giving them names, we hope families will feel a personal bond and become advocates for tiger conservation.”

Early development and care

At just a few months old, the cubs remain in close contact with Viktoria, who provides essential warmth, nutrition and early social lessons. Because the trio is still bonding, they are not yet open to public viewing. However, the zoo has set up a live streaming camera that allows residents and tiger enthusiasts to watch the cubs’ daily activities from home.

Veterinary staff monitor the cubs closely, checking weight gain, health indicators and developmental milestones. “Amur tigers are an endangered subspecies, and every successful birth is a step toward preserving genetic diversity,” noted Chief Veterinarian Dr. Laura Martinez. “We are thrilled that the cubs are thriving under Viktoria’s care.”

Why Amur tigers matter to Kentucky families

Amur tigers, also known as Siberian tigers, once roamed the forests of the Russian Far East. Habitat loss and poaching have reduced their numbers to fewer than 500 in the wild. The Louisville Zoo participates in the Species Survival Plan, a coordinated effort among accredited zoos to manage breeding and ensure a sustainable population.

For local families, the arrival of Frankie, Masha and Mira offers a tangible way to learn about wildlife stewardship. School groups frequently visit the zoo, and teachers can now incorporate the cubs into lesson plans about ecosystems, endangered species and the importance of protecting natural habitats.

Looking ahead

Zoo staff expect the cubs to be introduced to the public later this summer, once they are more independent and able to handle the excitement of visitors. In the meantime, the live cam remains a popular feature on the zoo’s website, drawing hundreds of viewers each day.

“We encourage Kentuckians to tune in, share the experience with friends, and consider supporting our conservation initiatives,” Hensley added. “Every donation helps us protect tigers both here and in the wild.”
