Middle school students from across Louisiana will compete at Louisiana State University in Shreveport in the state finals of the Civics Bee, an event designed to highlight civic knowledge and community engagement among young people.
Encouraging Civic Engagement
The competition, hosted at Louisiana State University in Shreveport, brings together students who advanced from regional events held across the state, including Northwest Louisiana. Dr. Timothy Magner, president of the Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, said the program is part of a national initiative launched by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to encourage students to become more engaged in civic life and better understand how their community’s function.
Students qualified for the state competition after submitting essays identifying local issues and proposing solutions. More than 100 students participated in Caddo Parish alone, with 20 advancing to the regional competition before 15 were selected statewide. Magner said some schools integrated the program into classroom instruction, including sessions where students met with public officials and learned how local government operates, from city councils to parish commissions.
The winner of the competition will advance to the national Civics Bee in Washington, D.C.
