Los Angeles Mayoral Race Heats Up with Electioneering Allegations

The race for mayor of Los Angeles has intensified as Republican challenger Spencer Pratt accuses incumbent Mayor Karen Bass of illegal electioneering. Pratt, who is running against Bass in the upcoming election, claims that the mayor violated election laws by campaigning too close to a ballot box.

Allegations and Responses

Pratt took to social media platform X to voice his concerns, pointing to videos posted by Bass that show her speaking to supporters holding campaign signs in Los Angeles High Memorial Park. According to Pratt, these activities occurred illegally close to a ballot box. Although the ballot box is not visible in the video with campaign signs, Bass is seen depositing her ballot in a separate video filmed in the same park, albeit without campaign signs in view.

Pratt’s campaign has filed a formal complaint with the California Secretary of State’s Office, alleging that Bass’s actions constitute illegal electioneering. California law prohibits electioneering within 100 feet of a polling place or any site where voters can cast or drop off ballots. Pratt’s campaign argues that Bass’s actions show a disregard for the rule of law and democratic processes.

Bass Campaign’s Defense

In response, Bass’s campaign spokesperson, Alex Stack, refuted the allegations, stating that the campaign adhered to all legal requirements. Stack explained that the videos were filmed in two separate locations within the park—one more than 200 feet away from the ballot box, where campaign signs were present, and another next to the ballot box, where no signs were visible. Stack emphasized that the rally with signs was held at a legal distance from the ballot box.

The California Secretary of State’s Office has acknowledged the complaint and stated that it takes violations of the California Elections Code seriously, promising to review all complaints thoroughly.

Political Context

The nonpartisan primary for mayor of Los Angeles is scheduled for June 2. If a candidate receives 51% or more of the vote, they will be elected mayor. Otherwise, the top two candidates will face off in the general election on November 3. According to a recent Emerson College Polling/Inside California Politics poll, Bass leads with 30% support, followed by Pratt at 22% and Los Angeles City Council member Nithya Raman at 19%.

This election cycle has seen heightened tensions, with Pratt’s campaign accusing Bass of being out of touch with the needs of Los Angeles residents, particularly in addressing crime and public safety. As the election approaches, both campaigns are ramping up efforts to secure voter support.
