Leawood Police are calling on motorists to exercise extra care in school zones after a 13‑year‑old boy was hit while riding a motorized scooter to school on Monday morning. The incident occurred at about 7:35 a.m. on 143rd Street near Mission Road, just west of Prairie Star Middle School.
According to a press release from Leawood Police Capt. Jason Ahring, the boy was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. He has since been released and is recovering at home. The extent of his injuries has not been disclosed.
Leawood Police Chief Brad Robbins said the driver of a small SUV traveling eastbound turned left into the entrance of Prairie Star Elementary School, striking the boy as he rode westbound. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
School Response
Prairie Star Middle School Principal Eric Rembold sent a message to families on Monday, confirming that 911 was called immediately and thanking first responders for their swift assistance. He also expressed gratitude that the student was “alert and talking” when officers arrived.
Police Safety Reminder
Capt. Ahring reiterated the department’s safety message on Tuesday, urging motorists, pedestrians, and students to slow down, stay alert, obey traffic laws, and watch for pedestrians in and around school zones. He also encouraged parents to discuss school‑zone safety with their children.
Leawood’s city council approved an ordinance in February requiring anyone 18 and under to wear a helmet while operating a motorized scooter. Neighboring cities such as Olathe, Overland Park, Prairie Village, and Shawnee have adopted similar scooter and e‑bike regulations in recent years.
Background
The discussion around scooter safety has been especially poignant in Leawood after a tragic accident in October of last year, when a 10‑year‑old boy was killed after being struck while riding a scooter near 103rd Street and Lee Boulevard. That child, Duke Ommert, was also wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Local officials continue to monitor scooter activity and work with schools to promote safe travel practices for students. Parents are urged to ensure their children wear helmets and to supervise younger riders whenever possible.
Leawood Police will continue to investigate the recent collision and will update the community as more information becomes available.
