Leander ISD Faces Budget Challenges, Considers Bond and Bus Updates

Leander Independent School District (LISD) has approved its 2026-27 compensation plan, opting for a 0% general pay increase due to ongoing budget constraints. Despite this, the district will provide a one-time retention payment of up to $1,000 for full-time employees and $500 for part-time staff. The plan allows for potential amendments later in the year if legislative changes occur.

Potential Bond Package in the Works

The Citizens’ Facility Advisory Committee (CFAC) is actively working on a potential bond package for a November 2026 election. Chief Operations Officer Jeremy Trimble updated the board on the committee’s progress, noting that it comprises 70 members across six subcommittees reviewing over 90 project categories. Superintendent Chris Clark emphasized the need for modernizing facilities and addressing aging infrastructure, with 10 campuses expected to reach their 25-year lifecycle between 2026 and 2030. Further discussions are scheduled for the June 4 board meeting, with an August 17 deadline to call for the bond election.

Bus Fleet Compliance with New Seat Belt Law

LISD is also considering options to comply with a new Texas law requiring three-point seat belts on all school buses by 2029. The district’s current fleet includes 318 buses, with 212 already equipped with the required seat belts. Options include retrofitting existing buses at a cost of $4.2 million or purchasing new buses for $18 million. The latter option would allow for a staggered replacement cycle. Trimble noted that while state funding is uncertain, there may be some financial assistance from the Texas Education Agency in the future.
