In a distressing incident at the Knoll Park Apartments in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, a man allegedly fired multiple rounds into neighboring apartments early Sunday morning. The chaotic scene was captured on a Ring camera, with neighbors urgently warning each other to take cover.
Details of the Incident
Police identified the suspect as Jared Hrezo, who reportedly fired from an upper-level apartment around 3 a.m. The gunfire, which included rounds from an AR-15-style rifle, pierced through a parking lot and into adjacent apartments. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the potential for tragedy was evident as bullets narrowly missed occupied areas.
Michelle O’Laughlin, the property manager, highlighted the damage, pointing out bullet holes in the apartment windows. One bullet hole was found just above the bed where tenant Jeana Rayles and her 5-year-old daughter usually sleep. Rayles expressed her gratitude that they were not home at the time, saying, “Just thank God. Literally, thank God. I’m just glad that we weren’t home.”
Legal Proceedings and Mental Health Concerns
During the initial court hearing, Lawrenceburg Police Detective Jeremy Shepherd testified that Hrezo appeared confused during questioning, mentioning people in hazmat suits watching him. Hrezo’s defense attorney has filed notice of an insanity defense, indicating plans to argue that Hrezo was not legally responsible due to mental illness at the time of the incident.
Hrezo remains in custody, facing charges of criminal recklessness and intimidation. His bond is set at $250,000 surety plus $50,000 cash. The community remains on edge as they process the aftermath of this unsettling event.
