Laurel Highlands Middle School to Begin Remote Learning Due to Mold Issues

Superintendent Jesse Wallace announced Thursday that Laurel Highlands Middle School will start the 2026‑27 school year with remote instruction for the first two weeks. The decision allows remediation contractors to address mold and mildew discovered throughout the building.

Reason for the delay

District officials learned last week that pipe insulation installed on cold‑water lines was not rated for low temperatures. Condensation from these pipes seeped through ceiling tiles, creating moisture that fostered mildew and small amounts of mold. Additional moisture was trapped in classrooms during summer floor rewaxing, and the HVAC ventilators were incorrectly fitted with cold‑weather piping intended for air‑conditioning.

“Because of that moisture, we’ve had mildew and very small amounts of mold show up, which is what everyone is talking about,” Wallace said. “We are postponing face‑to‑face learning until the contractor can rip out the faulty insulation and ceiling tile and eradicate any moisture damage on a permanent basis.”

Remediation efforts

Remediation company Firewater Response has been hired to replace ceiling tiles in 24 identified areas. In a letter to the district, Firewater reported finding suspect fungal growth on soft‑good furniture and pipe insulation. Air‑quality testing conducted by the firm returned results within normal ranges, but the district decided to keep the building vacant while work proceeds.

“We’re just not putting anybody in the building, so the contractor has the space and latitude to eradicate and remove all the unsuitable material,” Wallace added.

Timeline for return

All students in the district will resume in‑person classes on Tuesday, Aug. 25, but the middle school’s new start date is set for Sept. 8. The district will evaluate progress by Sept. 2 and announce any further delays as needed.

Wallace emphasized that the safety and welfare of students, staff, visitors, and parents remain the district’s top priority. He pledged transparency, stating that any documentation or updates will be shared publicly as they become available.

Impact on families

Parents are encouraged to keep children engaged with remote learning assignments during the two‑week period. The district will provide digital resources and support to ensure continuity of instruction.

Community members can expect regular updates through the district’s website and social‑media channels. The district’s proactive approach aims to restore a safe learning environment while minimizing disruption to students’ education.
