Los Angeles’ Women’s Professional Baseball League team, the Queens, has unveiled its nickname and logo ahead of the WPBL’s inaugural season. The team’s name is inspired by Lizzie Murphy, also known as the ‘Queen of the Diamond,’ who was the first woman to play baseball professionally.
Team History and Inspiration
Murphy, a Rhode Island native, excelled in various sports, including running, swimming, and skating, before becoming a professional baseball player. She competed with a Rhode Island semi-pro team at the age of 17 and later played for a team from Boston that toured the United States and Canada.
The Queens’ logo features a capital Q topped with four baseball diamonds, symbolizing the team’s commitment to the sport and its rich history. The team’s roster includes notable players such as center fielder Mo’ne Davis, who made history as a Little League sensation, and Japanese pitcher Ayami Sato.
Upcoming Season
The WPBL’s inaugural season is set to begin on August 1 in Springfield, Illinois, with games played at the historic Robin Roberts Stadium. The season will run through late September and include playoffs. Other teams in the league include the New York Heights, the San Francisco Firebells, and the Boston Hunters, each named after pioneering women in various fields.
