La Suprema Market in Frisco, Texas, is a unique blend of Hispanic groceries and cuisine with a Middle Eastern twist. The market, which features a taquería, coffee shop, and butcher’s counter, is owned by Summer Bannat, who grew up in Saudi Arabia.
Staying Local
Bannat, who moved to the U.S. from Saudi Arabia when she was 19, originally planned to convert La Suprema into a Middle Eastern market after taking over from the previous owners in 2018. However, after remodeling the space and bringing in new equipment, the positive response from former customers convinced her to maintain La Suprema as a primarily Hispanic market.
Bannat has kept on most of the original staff members, including key positions like the butcher and head chef, and has begun learning Spanish to better communicate with her employees. She has also brought in produce cases, added a small bakery section, and expanded the market’s inventory of Mexican snacks and spices.
What’s Special About It?
La Suprema’s taquería menu features traditional fillings like barbacoa and carnitas, as well as chicken and beef shawarma. The butcher’s counter offers a selection of halal options, and the coffee shop serves Arabian and Spanish lattes. Bannat plans to add even more fusion dishes this summer, including Swedish meatballs made with Mexican spices.
Bannat’s goal is to create a welcoming space for the Hispanic community in Frisco while also showcasing her own Middle Eastern roots. She is proud to have been able to maintain La Suprema as a Hispanic market and is excited to see how the community will respond to her new fusion dishes.
