Kimi Antonelli storms from P19 to win Italian Grand Prix, first Italian victor in 60 years

Monza, Italy – On Sunday, Kimi Antonelli turned a seemingly impossible start into a historic triumph at the Italian Grand Prix. Beginning the race in P19 after a power‑unit change, the young driver fought his way through the pack, ultimately crossing the finish line first and delivering a moment of pride for Italian motorsport fans.

From the back of the grid to the front

Antonelli’s charge began early. A red‑flag on lap three, caused by Charles Leclerc’s crash, allowed the field to reset. By the restart he had already climbed to P12. Within six more laps he was running in sixth place, and by lap twelve he had secured a podium position.

On lap 18 Antonelli seized the lead, only to pit for fresh medium‑compound tires after a virtual safety car period triggered by Lance Stroll. The pit stop dropped him to P6, but the young Italian quickly closed the gap to teammate George Russell, who had been leading the race.

Final battle and record‑breaking win

After a brief slip onto the gravel, Antonelli re‑entered the fight and executed a decisive overtake on Russell, taking the lead for good. He then set the fastest lap on the final circuit, cementing his dominance.

His victory marks the first time an Italian driver has won the Italian Grand Prix since Ludovico Scarfiotti’s 1966 triumph for Ferrari – a 60‑year drought finally broken. Antonelli’s post‑race comments reflected his disbelief: “I did not expect this. Unbelievable. I’m so happy, I could have never imagined I’d be here today.”

Championship implications

The win also deepened Antonelli’s lead in the Drivers’ Championship. Entering the race with a 59‑point advantage over Russell, the victory extended that margin to 66 points, with ten races still to run. Antonelli now boasts seven wins and eleven podiums from thirteen starts this season, underscoring his status as a serious title contender.

Russell, who finished second, praised Antonelli’s performance while acknowledging his own tire struggles: “Huge congrats to him. It was looking like a pretty strong race for us, but I was just struggling at the end on the tires.” Max Verstappen completed the podium in third place.

Looking ahead

Formula 1 will head to Spain next week for the inaugural street race in Madrid, where drivers will look to either close the gap or extend their leads. For Antonelli, the Monza victory not only adds a historic trophy to his cabinet but also reinforces his momentum as the season progresses.

Fans across Italy and the broader motorsport community celebrated the achievement, noting the significance of a homegrown champion succeeding on the sport’s most revered high‑speed circuit. The win serves as a reminder of the passion and talent that Italian racing continues to produce.
