Kids Dance Outreach to Open First Permanent Center in Northside Indy

Kids Dance Outreach, a nonprofit that provides free dance and arts education to more than 2,000 elementary‑age children each year, announced plans to build its first permanent home in Indianapolis’ Northside. The 11,170‑square‑foot, one‑story building will be located at 2955 N. Meridian Street, at the corner of 30th and Talbott streets, on a five‑acre site near the Children’s Museum.

Facility features and community impact

Designed by DKGR Architects, the new center will include a large gallery and lobby, two professional‑grade dance studios, a reception area, administrative offices, and storage space. One studio will double as a performance venue with seating for up to 180 people, allowing the organization to host master classes, workshops, community classes, and performances without relying on borrowed venues.

Executive Director Mónica Muñoz, a professional ballet dancer from Puerto Rico who has been with Kids Dance Outreach since its founding, said the permanent space will enable the nonprofit to fully live its mission. “We will finally have a permanent space and a home … where we can live our mission fully,” Muñoz told Mirror Indy. “We’re now on the cusp of a new era with the KDO center, which is going to unlock so much more potential and allows us to meet the growing demand of our community.”

Serving a diverse, low‑income population

The organization’s students are primarily Black and brown and come from low‑income families. Kids Dance Outreach offers free programs for children in third through eighth grade, exposing them to a blend of ballet, musical theater, African‑diaspora dance, Latin styles, street, and hip‑hop. The new building will let the nonprofit expand services, including the possibility of serving children before third grade and providing a dedicated space for students who age out of the current program.

Local families have welcomed the news. Ten‑year‑old Lane Blettner, a participant in the SWAT dance team, said the new center will give students “more space to dance for different groups to practice.” Ninth‑grader Samuel Shasanmi echoed the sentiment, noting that the organization “lets everyone have a chance to dance” and that he is excited to no longer rely on borrowed facilities.

Funding and development context

The $3.6 million project is part of a larger mixed‑use development that will include apartments and townhomes on the five‑acre lot. Kids Dance Outreach received a $1.3 million grant from the Regional Acceleration and Development Initiative (READI) toward a total of $5 million in funding for the new building.

Groundbreaking is slated for spring 2027, with an anticipated opening in fall 2028. The center will anchor the new development, contributing to the revitalization of the Mapleton‑Fall Creek neighborhood while providing a stable, purpose‑built environment for arts education.

About Kids Dance Outreach

Founded in 2012 by Michael Johnson as an associate of the National Dance Institute, Kids Dance Outreach has grown from a volunteer‑run program operating out of The Athenaeum to a city‑wide nonprofit with in‑school, summer, Dancers with Disabilities, and advanced SWAT and X dance teams. Classes and performances have been hosted at Butler University, various Indianapolis Public Schools, the Jewish Community Center, Frederick Douglass Park, Indiana University, and Dance Kaleidoscope.

Muñoz, who began as a volunteer, now leads the organization as it moves toward a permanent home that will allow it to expand its reach and deepen its impact on the community.
