Jurors in the Caleb Flynn murder trial in Tipp City heard new evidence on Friday as prosecutors played text messages from Ashley Flynn’s phone and two recorded police interviews with Flynn. The trial centers on the September 2023 killing of Ashley Flynn, who was found shot to death in the family home.
FBI Agent Highlights Text Messages
FBI Special Agent Andrea Kinzig testified that several messages revealed Ashley’s frustration with her husband. In a Jan. 21 exchange, Caleb told Ashley he was “worshipping” and would call later. Later messages showed Ashley’s irritation over Caleb’s failure to make a reservation for their Valentine’s Day dinner and his lack of responsiveness.
Kinzig noted she found no texts indicating Ashley feared for her safety. On cross‑examination, the defense highlighted affectionate exchanges about their children, Valentine’s Day plans, and Caleb’s health.
Health Concerns Mentioned in Texts
On Feb. 11, Caleb texted, “I’m sorry I woke up late. This cough and no sleep is really starting to catch up to me.” The next day he wrote that he was at CVS getting a steroid and inhaler, which Ashley hoped would bring relief. In a Feb. 1 message to her sister, Ashley expressed concern, saying, “I’m feeling good, but Caleb is not… If he’s not any better tomorrow, I am going to make him go to the doctor.”
Detective Plays Recorded Interviews
Detective Sgt. Mike Morgan of Tipp City testified while playing two interviews conducted with Flynn on Feb. 16. In the first interview, Flynn described his wife as “the nicest person in the world” and said the family “keeps to ourselves” and “goes to church.” He recounted hearing gunshots after checking on his daughters and finding Ashley unresponsive.
During the second interview, Flynn explained he moved to the couch because of his coughing, stating, “I couldn’t stop coughing, and she asked me, ‘Could you please get out?’” He said he heard the dog’s collar, prayed over his children, and fell asleep before hearing two gunshots. When asked about the scene, Flynn said he grabbed Ashley’s foot in the dark, turned on the light, and saw her.
Prosecution’s Theory
Prosecutors argue that Flynn killed Ashley and staged the scene to look like a home invasion. Flynn has pleaded not guilty, and the trial will continue Monday morning.
