Jackson Council Postpones Decision on Parking Garage Fee Structure

The Jackson Town Council has decided to postpone its decision on a proposed change to the fee structure for the parking garage located at the corner of Millward Street and Simpson Avenue. This decision comes amid concerns over the impact on residents who rely on the garage for overnight parking, especially during the winter months.

Proposed Fee Structure

Transportation Manager Dr. Charlotte Frei presented a plan that would allow the first 10 hours of parking to be free, followed by a $4 per hour charge, capping at $20 per day. Currently, parking is free during the day, with a $4 per hour charge between midnight and 4 a.m., also capping at $20 overnight.

Data from the SKIDATA parking management system, installed last November, revealed a significant drop in overnight occupancy, from nearly full capacity to a median of just 20% since the fee system was implemented last fall.

Concerns and Suggestions

Councilor Devon Viehman suggested extending the free parking period to 12 hours to better accommodate overnight users, allowing residents to park from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. without incurring fees. However, Viehman noted that this might still be a tight turnaround, particularly in winter conditions.

Councilor Jonathan Schechter expressed concerns that regular overnight users could face monthly parking costs approaching $600 if the current payment structure remains unchanged.

Next Steps

The council’s decision to delay aims to further explore options that balance the town’s financial needs with the residents’ reliance on the parking facility. The council will revisit the discussion at a future meeting, seeking a solution that considers both economic and community impacts.
