Iran has issued dramatic new demands for the Strait of Hormuz to reopen, including that the United States ‘corrects its behavior’ and permanently ends the war with Iran and its armed allies in the region.
Iran’s Demands
The demands, made by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, include the lifting of a naval blockade of Iranian ports, the withdrawal of US military from the area, and ‘complete compensation’ for war damage. The US must also lift sanctions and ‘unconditionally’ release frozen assets.
The United Arab Emirates reported that one of its ships was targeted by an Iranian missile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The ship, owned by Abu Dhabi’s state-owned ADNOC oil and gas company, was attacked early Saturday, but there were no casualties.
Regional Tensions
Yemen’s military attacked Iran-backed Houthi rebels in response to recent strikes in central and eastern Yemen. The escalation threatens to reignite Yemen’s civil war following a 2022 truce.
