IndyCar Freedom 250 Grand Prix to race through Washington, D.C. streets

Washington, D.C. – The NTT IndyCar Series is set to stage a historic street race this summer, the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, winding through the city’s most recognizable landmarks. The event, scheduled for early September, will see the premier open‑wheel series race past the National Mall, the Smithsonian museums and the Capitol building, marking a rare appearance of IndyCar on the nation’s capital streets.

Drivers highlight the significance

Team Penske’s two‑time Indianapolis 500 winner Josef Newgarden and Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood joined Fox & Friends to discuss the race’s importance. Newgarden called the opportunity “once‑in‑a‑lifetime,” noting that IndyCar may not return to Washington again for many years. “We want to go out there and win for Team Penske and represent the country,” he said.

Kirkwood, who sits second in the championship standings, described the circuit’s layout along Pennsylvania Avenue and around the museums as “a beautiful backdrop” for the 250‑mile event. He added that the race will draw about 100,000 spectators each day, with suites and fan experiences planned throughout the two‑day weekend.

Celebrating America’s 250th birthday

Fox Sports IndyCar commentator Will Buxton framed the race as a celebration of the United States’ 250th anniversary. “The automobile was invented in 1886, the first auto race in America was in 1895, and the first Indianapolis 500 came just 16 years later,” Buxton said. “For over half of this nation’s history, car culture has been at the heart of what makes America great. This race honors that legacy in our capital.”

Event details

Practice begins Saturday morning, with qualifying slated for early Saturday evening. The Grand Prix itself will start at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, preceded by pre‑race coverage at 11:30 a.m. on FOX. The race will be run on a temporary street circuit that threads down Pennsylvania Avenue, circles the National Mall, and passes directly by the Capitol dome, offering a unique visual experience for television viewers and on‑site fans alike.

Organizers say the Freedom 250 will be the series’ biggest spectacle to date, combining high‑speed competition with a patriotic backdrop. The event is expected to boost local tourism and showcase Washington’s capacity to host major sporting events beyond the traditional political gatherings.

Community and economic impact

City officials anticipate a significant economic boost from the influx of visitors, with hotels, restaurants and local merchants poised to benefit from the crowds. The race also provides an opportunity for community outreach, as IndyCar partners plan youth engagement programs and charitable activities tied to the event.

As the Freedom 250 approaches, fans across the country are encouraged to follow the coverage on FOX and consider traveling to the capital to witness a historic moment in American motorsport.
