Marion County, home to one of the largest populations of Filipinos in Indiana, is set to host a new art show celebrating Filipino American stories in the Hoosier state. The Barangay Club, the leading Filipino institution, started in Indianapolis in 1960, initially as a place for students and professionals to participate in traditional arts and crafts of the Philippines.

LAHI: Weaving Filipino American Stories in Indiana

The Harrison Center is now looking for artists to explore that heritage in an upcoming group art show, titled ‘LAHI: Weaving Filipino American Stories in Indiana.’ The exhibit will recognize the longstanding presence and contributions of Filipino Americans in the state and will run from October 2-29 in the Speck Gallery.

Artworks in the exhibition should reflect the complexity and resilience of the Filipino experience, exploring themes like identity and belonging, family, ancestry, and memory, immigration and diaspora, and traditional and modern Filipino culture. Artists can submit up to three pieces, including titles, medium, dimensions, year, and sale price. All work must be for sale and suitable for all ages.

For inspiration, artists can check out the Indianapolis Public Library’s collection on the contributions of the Filipino community in Indiana. Submissions are due by August 28, and accepted artists will be notified by September 4.
