ICC Chief Prosecutor Faces Removal Vote

The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, is facing a removal vote over allegations of sexual misconduct with a female aide. The vote, which will be held in secret, comes after the ICC’s executive committee found Khan guilty of a “serious breach of duty and serious misconduct”.

Allegations and Investigation

Khan, a British barrister, has steadfastly denied the allegations, which were first reported by The Associated Press. The allegations have become entwined with the ICC’s investigation into the war in Gaza, which has sparked controversy and backlash from the United States and other countries.

The ICC issued arrest warrants in 2024 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for crimes against humanity. The decision sparked considerable backlash, including multiple rounds of sanctions against Khan and other court staff by the Trump administration.

Implications and Future

The outcome of the vote is unclear, but the Netherlands, the ICC’s host state, has announced its support for Khan’s removal. The vote’s result will have significant implications for the ICC’s future and its ability to investigate and prosecute international crimes.

The ICC is already under enormous pressure, and the lengthy and complicated process has created huge divisions within the court. The court’s investigation into the war in Gaza has been a major point of contention, with some countries accusing the ICC of overstepping its authority and others praising its efforts to hold leaders accountable for human rights abuses.
