Hundreds of fish die as drought dries pond in Exeter’s Pinhoe estate

On August 5, residents of the Pinhoe housing estate on the outskirts of Exeter discovered a large pond shrinking to a shallow pool. The water level fell so low that fish were flopping in just a few inches of water, prompting concern and a flurry of social‑media posts.

Community response

Adrian Clarke, 55, who lives five miles from the pond, posted video footage on Facebook showing the struggling fish. The post quickly gathered hundreds of comments from neighbors worried about the wildlife. Clarke, who works at an electrical shop in Exeter, described the scene as “painful” and said it “nearly left me in tears.”

In response, a local team from Greendale Farm Shop arrived with nets and planks, rescuing roughly 600 fish from the drying water. Clarke also set up wooden walkways across the muddy bottom so volunteers could reach the fish without sinking.

Official reaction

MP David Reed, representing Exeter East and Exmouth, joined residents in contacting the Environment Agency to raise concerns about the fish, protected newts and other wildlife that depend on the pond. The agency’s spokesperson acknowledged that droughts are taking a toll on watercourses and wildlife, but clarified that its resources are focused on rescuing fish in rivers and streams, not ornamental ponds.

“While we are unable to carry out fish rescues from ornamental ponds, we are always willing to give advice to owners on the best way to safely and legally mind their stock,” the spokesperson said. The agency added that moving fish improperly can spread disease and introduce predators to new habitats.

Challenges and uncertainties

Despite the rescue effort, there is no guarantee the relocated fish will survive. Clarke noted that many volunteers are attempting to rehome the fish, but the long‑term outlook remains uncertain.

Clarke also reported that he reached out to the Devon Wildlife Trust and South West Water for assistance, but received no response. He expressed frustration, saying the Environment Agency “doesn’t care” and “is a waste of space.”

Wider context

The incident comes as three‑quarters of England is experiencing drought conditions linked to hotter, drier weather patterns. Experts attribute the trend to climate change, and Europe is expected to face a fifth heatwave of the summer.

Local authorities and environmental groups continue to monitor water levels and wildlife health across the region, urging residents to conserve water and report similar incidents.
