Hillsborough County residents should plan for additional travel time this week as the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 7 released a weekly advisory outlining a series of nighttime lane closures and construction projects across the county. The work, which begins Sunday, August 23, will affect major interstates, bridges and key surface highways through the end of August and into early October.
Interstate and bridge closures
On Interstate 75, FDOT will close lanes nightly between the I‑4 interchange and Fowler Avenue from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. The closures start Sunday, Aug 23 and continue through Friday, Oct 2.
Cross‑bay traffic on Interstate 275 will also be impacted. The Howard Franklin Bridge, which connects Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, will see nightly closures from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning Sunday, Aug 23 and ending Saturday, Aug 29. Northbound I‑275 from the bridge to Exit 39 (State Road 60 West/State Road 689) will be closed nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Thursday, Aug 27.
On US 92, the eastbound lanes of the Gandy Bridge will be restricted overnight from 6:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. each night Sunday through Friday, Aug 28. The US 41 bridge over McKay Bay (22nd Street Causeway) will have nightly closures from 7 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. through Thursday, Aug 27.
Surface‑street projects
Several arterial routes will see nightly lane reductions:
- US 92 (Hillsborough Avenue): Lanes closed from 39th Street North to 42nd Street North nightly 7:30 p.m.–7 a.m. through Friday, Aug 28. Additional overnight closures at North 15th Street from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Thursday, Aug 27.
- US 301: Overnight work from the Manatee County line to State Road 674 (Sun City Center Boulevard) 7 p.m.–6:30 a.m. through Saturday, Aug 29. Nightly closures at Big Bend Road 7 p.m.–6 a.m. through Thursday, Aug 27, and between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (State Road 574) and State Road 60 8 p.m.–6 a.m. through Thursday, Aug 27. Daytime closures on Ayersworth Glen Boulevard 8 a.m.–6 p.m. Monday, Aug 24 through Friday, Aug 28.
- State Road 60: Three sections will close overnight through Thursday, Aug 27. On Kennedy Boulevard, work runs from Woodlynne Avenue to Brevard Avenue 10 p.m.–6:30 a.m. On Adamo Drive, lanes close at North 26th Street 8:30 p.m.–6:30 a.m. East of Brandon, closures occur between Buckingham Place and Lithia Pinecrest Road 8 p.m.–6 a.m.
- State Road 574 (West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard): Daytime closures at North 12th Street Monday‑Friday 8 a.m.–6 p.m., with additional evening closures 7 p.m.–midnight through Thursday, Aug 27. Overnight closures at Buccaneer Place 6:30 p.m.–7 a.m. through Thursday, Aug 27.
What drivers should do
The FDOT advisory urges motorists to allow extra travel time, stay alert for construction signage and exercise caution in work zones. Drivers are encouraged to check real‑time traffic updates via local news outlets or the FDOT website before departing.
