Former Seahawks running back Myles Gaskin retires at 29 after Super Bowl win

Seattle – Myles Gaskin, the former Seattle Seahawks running back, posted on social media Thursday that he is retiring from professional football at 29 years old. In his brief statement, Gaskin said, “Football…there will never be enough words to explain how I feel about you, so I won’t even try. What I will do is give all the game you gave me to the next generation of young players who dare to be great. Thank you. It’s been real.”

Career overview

Gaskin entered the NFL as a seventh‑round selection (234th overall) by the Miami Dolphins in the 2019 draft. Over four seasons in Miami, he worked his way up the depth chart, eventually earning a starting role. His most productive year came in 2021 when he rushed for 612 yards on 173 carries, added three rushing touchdowns, and caught 49 passes for 234 yards and four receiving scores.

After a one‑year contract extension in 2023, Gaskin was released before the regular season began. He then spent time with several teams, including practice‑squad stints with the Minnesota Vikings, a short appearance for the Los Angeles Rams, and later roles with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens. In October 2025, he signed with the Seattle Seahawks, contributing on special teams and seeing limited offensive snaps during the team’s Super Bowl‑winning campaign in Santa Clara.

College roots and local ties

Born and raised in Lynnwood, Washington, Gaskin stayed in‑state for college, playing for the University of Washington Huskies. He made history in 2015 as the first true freshman running back in school history to rush for more than 1,000 yards, finishing the season with 1,302 yards on 227 carries.

His connection to the Pacific Northwest remained strong throughout his career, and his retirement announcement was met with congratulations from local fans and former teammates who praised his work ethic and humility.

Career totals and future outlook

Across seven NFL seasons, Gaskin accumulated 1,360 rushing yards, 102 receptions for 712 receiving yards, and 13 total touchdowns. While his on‑field production was modest compared to some league stars, his versatility—playing both offense and special teams—made him a valuable depth piece for multiple franchises.

Gaskin indicated that he plans to focus on mentoring young athletes and exploring opportunities outside of football. He thanked the game for the experiences it provided and expressed confidence that the next generation will continue to excel.

His retirement adds to a recent wave of early exits by NFL players, highlighting the physical toll of the sport and the growing emphasis on life after football. Fans in Seattle and across the nation will remember Gaskin for his perseverance, his role in a championship team, and his commitment to the community that helped shape his career.
