Chuck Brown Day proceeds in D.C. without family participation

Washington, D.C. – The city’s annual Chuck Brown Day, honoring the “Godfather of Go‑Go,” will be held Saturday at Fort Dupont Park even though the Brown family has withdrawn its support. The family announced the decision on Tuesday, saying the event no longer reflects the collaboration and respect they feel Chuck Brown’s legacy deserves.

Family cites communication issues with the parks department

Chuck Brown’s son, Nekos Brown Sr., told WTOP that the primary concerns involve the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR). He said, “It’s been three years of issues we’ve been having with them as far as staying on par with proper communication, just overall professionalism and the ability to take our stance seriously.” Brown added that the relationship changed after the celebration moved from Chuck Brown Memorial Park to Fort Dupont Park, though he emphasized that the venue change itself was not the cause of the dispute.

The Brown family has historically been involved in nearly every aspect of the event, from approving promotional posts to authorizing the use of Chuck Brown’s name and image. “Every single thing has to run through us,” Brown explained. “That is how we stay on brand with everything that has to do with my father.”

DPR acknowledges family’s absence

DPR Director Thennie Freeman said the department learned in February that the family would not participate this year. “We appreciate the Chuck Brown family and their contribution to the event,” Freeman said. “We look forward to them coming back and participating in future years.” She noted that the Chuck Brown Foundation, which traditionally distributes backpacks during the celebration, will be missed.

Freeman compared the celebration of Brown’s legacy to those honoring other music icons, stating, “Everybody loves Michael Jackson, and so you see Michael Jackson celebrations all throughout the world. Prayerfully, people will have Chuck Brown celebrations all throughout the world.”

Event details and community response

Despite the family’s withdrawal, the free, rain‑or‑shine event will feature performances by local go‑go groups including Junkyard Band, Backyard Band, Major League Band, EU featuring Sugar Bear, and the All‑Star Band. Food trucks, vendors, and art exhibits are also scheduled.

When asked what he would say to the thousands expected to attend, Brown said, “It’s not for me to decide what people should and should not do on a certain day.” He encouraged supporters to honor his father by listening to his music, purchasing merchandise at WindMeUpChuck.com, or attending shows by the Chuck Brown Band.

Legacy extends beyond a single day

Both Freeman and Brown agreed that Chuck Brown’s influence reaches far beyond the annual celebration. “Chuck is more than a day to D.C.,” Freeman said. Brown added, “Upholding my father’s legacy is a daily task. It’s not a single‑day thing.”

Brown acknowledged that the family’s absence will be felt, especially since the event falls on his father’s birthday. “It’s something we used to always look forward to,” he said. “I won’t miss the heat, I’ll say that.”

The celebration proceeds as planned, reflecting the city’s commitment to honoring local cultural heritage while navigating the practical challenges of event coordination.
