Heartland towns show higher early‑marriage rates than coastal metros, study finds

Young adults who want to marry before age 30 should look beyond the glitter of New York, Los Angeles and other coastal hubs. A recent analysis from the Institute for Family Studies (IFS) reveals that early‑marriage rates are significantly higher in many heartland communities, while the nation’s biggest entertainment centers lag behind.

Where the odds are best for young couples

According to the IFS “Get Married Maps,” the top regions for adults ages 22‑29 include Provo, Utah, as well as parts of Tennessee, Indiana, Nebraska, Kentucky, Idaho, North Carolina, Kansas and Georgia. These areas consistently out‑performed coastal metros in the percentage of residents who wed before turning 30.

In contrast, eight of the ten regions with the lowest early‑marriage rates are concentrated in the New York and Los Angeles metropolitan areas. The study notes that a high concentration of single young people does not automatically translate into more marriages; in fact, the nation’s top ten areas with the highest share of singles (over 80 % unmarried) are far from the places where new marriages are happening.

Factors behind the divide

IFS researchers point to a mix of employment, religious affiliation and, notably, the 2024 presidential vote as correlates of marriage trends. Regions that backed President Trump over Vice President Harris showed a strong positive correlation with early‑marriage rates among twenty‑somethings. For adults in their thirties, the correlation reverses, suggesting that older singles may find more opportunities in larger urban economies.

Economic stability also matters. In areas where full‑time‑employed single men earn at least $60,000 a year, women in their thirties are more likely to marry. Among twenty‑somethings, high‑earning men are about twice as likely to tie the knot as lower‑earning peers, underscoring the role of financial security in family formation.

Implications for families and communities

“Given the many benefits of marriage, a city where more young people are tying the knot might ultimately provide a more fulfilling life than one with just excellent entertainment and tasty food—but few weddings,” the IFS report states. For families rooted in faith and traditional values, the findings reinforce the importance of community environments that encourage marriage and stable households.

While the study does not claim that a particular political climate causes marriage, it highlights a clear pattern: rural and mid‑western locales that supported President Trump tend to have higher early‑marriage rates. This suggests that cultural attitudes toward family, faith and personal responsibility remain stronger in those regions.

What this means for young adults

For twenty‑somethings who are serious about marriage, the data advises a careful look at where they choose to live. Moving to a major coastal city may offer career opportunities and cultural amenities, but it also comes with a lower probability of finding a spouse in the early twenties. Those willing to wait until their thirties may still find vibrant dating scenes in places like New York, San Jose, Los Angeles and Chicago, where marriage rates rise for older singles.

Ultimately, the IFS encourages young people to weigh personal goals, faith commitments and economic prospects when deciding where to settle. As the nation continues to grapple with shifting demographics, the study provides a useful roadmap for those who view marriage as a cornerstone of strong families and thriving communities.
