Hayward Resident Lyle Prijoles Killed in Philippines Military Operation

Hayward, Calif. – The Bay Area’s sizable Filipino community is mourning the death of Lyle Prijoles, a 40‑year‑old Filipino American who was killed on April 19 during a Philippine military operation in Negros Occidental. Prijoles, a longtime advocate for farm workers, had been traveling to the Philippines since 2006 to document the hardships of sugar‑cane laborers.

Alongside Prijoles, 26‑year‑old activist Kai Sorem of Seattle also lost his life in the same operation. The Armed Forces of the Philippines say the two were linked to the Communist Party’s New People’s Army, a claim disputed by their families and human‑rights groups who describe them as peaceful labor organizers.

Calls for Accountability

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives, led by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D‑WA), have urged an independent investigation into the incident, emphasizing that two American citizens were killed under contested circumstances. The push reflects broader concerns about how allied militaries treat U.S. nationals abroad.

Filipino American Ties to the Philippines

California is home to nearly two million Filipino Americans, roughly half of the nation’s total. Each year, Filipino households in the United States send an estimated $17 billion in remittances to the Philippines, accounting for about one‑tenth of that country’s economy. These funds support education, food, medical care, and the livelihood of elderly parents.

For many families, the Philippines is not a distant land but a place of deep personal connection—where parents were born, cousins still reside, and grandparents are buried. The loss of Prijoles and Sorem underscores how those ties can bring both hope and heartbreak.

Broader Context

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s recent State of the Nation Address focused heavily on China’s assertiveness in the West Philippine Sea, rejecting racist insults aimed at Filipinos and affirming the nation’s sovereignty. While foreign policy dominated the speech, the treatment of Filipino Americans and other citizens abroad remains a pressing domestic concern.

Human‑rights advocates argue that the Philippines, which inherited many democratic institutions from the United States, still struggles with accountability for its security forces. The deaths of Prijoles and Sorem have reignited calls for greater transparency and protection of citizens, both Filipino and American, who work to improve conditions in the archipelago.

As the investigation unfolds, the Hayward community and the broader Filipino American diaspora will be watching closely, hoping for answers and justice for the two slain activists.
