American Gretchen Walsh — a training partner of Kate Douglass — set a new world record in the 50-meter freestyle at the Sette Colli meet in Rome, with a time of 23.55 seconds.
This record is 0.04 seconds faster than Douglass’ time at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Indianapolis on June 19. Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom finished second with a time of 23.86 seconds.
Walsh, 23, also holds the long-course world record in the 100 butterfly and numerous other short-course and relay world marks. She won a pair of relay golds and two silvers at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
