Gov. Braun Expands One‑Stop Flood Recovery Centers Across Indiana

Indiana is moving into the next phase of recovery from the devastating floods that struck the state in August, and Governor Mike Braun is leading the effort with a statewide rollout of one‑stop recovery centers. These hubs bring together local, state and federal resources so families can obtain help for repairs, insurance issues and FEMA assistance in a single location.

New Center Opening in Lake County

One‑stop shops are already operating in Marion County and East Central Indiana. A new center is slated to open in Lake County next week, extending the network to the state’s northwest region. Braun explained that the goal is to make it simple for residents to “go to one place to see what the local help can be, state help and especially FEMA.”

Focus on Families Still Displaced

The administration’s current priority is families who have not yet been able to return home. While some homeowners have flood insurance to cover repair costs, many are still navigating claims. To protect those families, Indiana placed a 30‑day moratorium on certain insurance cancellations, giving residents breathing room as they assess damage.

Governor Braun urged anyone experiencing difficulty with their insurance carrier to contact the state promptly. “We want to hear about it and move that along as quickly as you can,” he said. “If you’re having difficulty with your own insurance companies, we want to know about it too, because that needs to come in before FEMA can do the rest of what they need to do.”

FEMA Funding and Temporary Housing

To date, FEMA has distributed about $89 million in assistance to Indiana flood victims. The state is also providing temporary housing options for displaced families while permanent repairs are underway.

Debris Removal Efforts

One of the most visible challenges has been clearing the massive amounts of debris left in streets and neighborhoods. Braun highlighted that debris removal “has made the most difference because it can stay around a long time.” The state assumed responsibility for debris removal and contracted private companies to clear damaged areas efficiently.

Looking Ahead: Major Repairs and Long‑Term Recovery

The next hurdle is assisting families whose homes require extensive repairs or are uninhabitable. “We’re now in that period where we need to make sure those families that many of them won’t be able to go back to their home,” Braun said. “It’ll take a while to sort out how much it’s going to take, how you’re going to fix it up.”

By consolidating services and expanding the one‑stop shop model, Indiana hopes to accelerate the path to normalcy for flood‑impacted communities while ensuring that families receive the full range of support they are entitled to under state and federal programs.
