Georgetown, Kentucky Mayor Burney Jenkins was recently inducted into the National Federation of High School Sports Hall of Fame. Jenkins, who has spent over 50 years officiating and coaching at various levels, expressed his surprise and gratitude at the recognition.
A Lifetime of Service
Jenkins began his teaching, coaching, and officiating career in the 1970s. He has officiated at the high school, college, and professional levels for sports such as basketball, football, and baseball. Currently, he still serves as a referee at local high school football games and works on replays for the NCAA.
Jenkins credits his experience in officiating and coaching with teaching him valuable skills that he now applies to his role as mayor. “As a coach, you learn teamwork, as a teacher you learn goal setting, as a referee it’s about making sure everybody gets an equal chance,” said Jenkins.
Jenkins is the 12th Kentuckian to be inducted into the National Federation of High School Sports Hall of Fame. He remains committed to public service and continues to serve the people of Georgetown.
