George Santos Faces Investigation Over State of the Union Bet

Former U.S. Representative George Santos is facing a federal investigation after allegedly engaging in insider trading on a prediction market concerning his attendance at President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address. The online platform Kalshi reported Santos to the Department of Justice after detecting unusual trades made by him prior to Trump’s February 24 speech.

Allegations of Insider Trading

Santos had publicly stated his intention to attend the State of the Union, which followed his clemency from President Trump in a previous fraud case. However, on the night of the speech, Santos posted on social media that he was delayed at the airport, leading to accusations of manipulating the market for personal gain. Kalshi, which had set the odds of his attendance at 75%, referred the case to both the Department of Justice and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

Regulatory Scrutiny

The CFTC, a federal body responsible for regulating futures and options markets, has been increasing its oversight of prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket. These platforms have faced calls from lawmakers to prevent insider trading, and some investigations have already resulted in criminal charges. In a related case, a soldier was charged with using classified information to profit from predictions on Polymarket.

Santos’s Response

Santos, who had previously served a brief prison sentence for fraud and identity theft before receiving clemency, has not publicly confirmed or denied having a Kalshi account. In a podcast, he commented on the market’s volatility, suggesting that both losses and unexpected gains were possible outcomes for participants.

The investigation into Santos’s actions highlights ongoing concerns about the integrity of prediction markets and the potential for misuse by individuals with insider knowledge. As these platforms grow, regulatory bodies continue to emphasize the importance of transparency and fair trading practices.
