Gates Foundation pledges $1 B for AI access, urges Trump administration to lead

In a major philanthropic push, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation unveiled a $1 billion, two‑year plan to broaden artificial intelligence access for underserved communities worldwide. The initiative, detailed in the foundation’s annual Goalkeepers report, will fund AI model training in local languages, health‑care tools, educational resources and agricultural advice for small farmers.

Trump administration called on to support global aid

Foundation CEO Mark Suzman said the effort will be paired with continued pressure on President Trump’s administration and Congress to restore U.S. leadership on foreign assistance. \”We haven’t given up on the U.S.,\” Suzman told the Associated Press, acknowledging recent challenges in federal aid but insisting a case remains for robust international support.

Partnerships with leading AI firms

The foundation is collaborating with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google.org and Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab. OpenAI pledged $50 million to train health workers in Rwandan clinics, with plans to expand across Africa. Anthropic will help accelerate vaccine development and improve crop‑data sets, while Google.org and Microsoft are supporting an open call for projects that create data sets in under‑represented African languages.

Funding breakdown

Approximately $400 million will target education, including tools that help teachers redesign lesson plans based on student comprehension. Another $400 million is earmarked for health‑care applications, such as AI that double‑checks clinicians’ reports for missed symptoms. Roughly $100 million will support agriculture, providing real‑time advice on weather, pests and fertilizer use to farmers.

Addressing inequality and safety concerns

Bill Gates warned that AI could become either \”the greatest equalizer\” or \”the worst source of injustice.\” He highlighted risks of fraud, disinformation, surveillance, cyber‑attacks and bioterrorism, urging safeguards that protect vulnerable populations.

Suzman emphasized that AI must perform well in all local languages, not just English or Mandarin, to avoid widening the gap between rich and poor nations. The foundation’s $100 million language‑data set effort aims to build resources for underserved communities.

Context of U.S. policy

The report notes that disruptions by the Trump administration to a global AIDS relief program have hampered disease prevention efforts in dozens of countries, underscoring the need for renewed U.S. commitment.

As the United Nations prepares for its high‑level General Assembly meetings, the Gates Foundation hopes its AI investments will help accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals while urging policymakers to keep pace with rapid technological change.
