Fresno County’s Transportation Tax Measure Faces Deadline Challenges

Fresno County’s efforts to replace its longstanding transportation sales tax are facing significant hurdles as the ‘Better Roads, Safe Streets’ campaign works to qualify for the November ballot. The campaign recently learned that it did not meet the required threshold in a random sample test conducted by the Fresno County Clerk’s Office. As a result, a full count of the submitted signatures is underway.

Signature Validation Process

The campaign submitted approximately 32,500 signatures in April, of which nearly 22,000 must be validated to secure a spot on the ballot. Fresno County Clerk James Kus expressed cautious optimism about meeting the early July deadline for validation, though he acknowledged the challenges posed by concurrent election responsibilities, including the upcoming June 2 primary.

The random sample test revealed a 77% validity rate among the signatures, higher than other recent statewide petitions. However, the presence of duplicate signatures necessitated a full count, which is now in progress. The deadline for local measures to qualify for the ballot is August 7, with a few weeks’ extension possible for processing.

Political Dynamics and Alternatives

While ‘Better Roads, Safe Streets’ remains hopeful, the campaign faces opposition from the ‘Fix Our Roads’ group, backed by former Fresno County Supervisor Henry R. Perea. This rival measure has yet to submit its signatures, and discussions of a potential compromise between the two initiatives have been mentioned, though not confirmed by key stakeholders, including Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer.

Supervisor Garry Bredefeld, a vocal critic of the ‘Better Roads, Safe Streets’ proposal, argues that it inadequately addresses local road and transportation needs. He has previously suggested an alternative general sales tax but expressed reluctance to support additional taxation, citing concerns about over-taxation.

As the clock ticks, the outcome remains uncertain. The Fresno County Clerk’s Office continues its efforts to balance the demands of the signature validation process with other electoral duties. The decision on whether the measure will appear on the November ballot hinges on the timely completion of this process.
